It's Been A Little Over 1000 Days Since 7 Oct
It has been a little over one thousand days since 7 October 2024. All the hostages have been returned, and Kassam rocket attacks have pretty much ceased. For the most part, the fighting has ended, with a few exceptions. The discovery and destruction of the underground tunnel network still continue.
ON ONE HAND, LITTLE HAS CHANGED
There is a certain leave of calm and peace, but we know all too well that it can change any moment. There have been reports that Hamas is presently using this lull in fighting to, as in days and ceasefires of the past, to restock and retrain. Hamas is currently hijacking truckloads of humanitarian aid that is designated for the people of Gaza.
ON THE OTHER HAND, NOTHING IS THE SAME
This peace and calm feel completely different from anything before. Every day, politicians worldwide are making threats and drawing “red lines” in the sand. It feels like we are all walking on eggshells, just waiting for someone to push the button.
YET OUR WORK GOES ON
In spite of all this, we still have a new building we continue to renovate and organize. Until the summer break, the school lunch program was feeding hungry children daily. New clothing, shoes, bedding, towels, and toiletries are still going out our doors even though we have not had a “grand opening”
Soldiers still call us regularly asking for food for Shabbat. When funding is available, we are right there for them. Unfortunately, with the strengthening of the shekel, our US dollars are not going quite as far. In the past, as an example, one thousand US dollars ($1000.00) could be exchanged for 3650.00 NIS. Just a week ago, that same one thousand US dollars only produced 2950.00 NIS; that hurts!
The exterior of the building has been put on hold as they modify the yard to make room for the new bomb shelter for the preschool next door. We have been told that once the bomb shelter installation is finished, our yard will be leveled and overlaid with new astro turf. Until then, my plans for the yard, and I do have plans for the outside, remain on hold.
LOOKING DOWN THE ROAD
This is already the middle of July, and the fall feasts are just around the corner. Yom Teruah, or what most people call Rosh Hashanah, starts the fall feasts. It is a time of blowing the trumpets, the shofar. It is a joyous occasion with family, friends, and special meals. Unfortunately for many, it is a stressful time to try to provide those holiday meals. For the past eighteen years, we have done our best to help as many as possible eliminate that stress and make their holidays happier.
